A lieutenant named Nils Egeli became interested in the penguin colony at the zoo. When the Royal Guard returned to Edinburgh in 1972, Egeli arranged for the regime to accept Pguin. This penguin was named Nils Olav after Nils Egel and King Olav V of Norway.

Nils Olav was initially given a rank in the regime. Each time the Kingsguard returns to the zoo, it is upgraded. He received the rank of corporal in 1982 and sergeant in 1987.

Nils Olav I died shortly after being promoted to sergeant in 1987, and was succeeded by the two-year-old Nils Olav II. In 1993 he received the rank of regimental sergeant, and in 2001 he received the rank of "honorary regimental sergeant".

The knighthood was confirmed by King Harald V, and Nils was the first pguin in the Norwegian army to receive such an honor.

Sir Nils is a king penguin, a large type of bird that likes to snack on small fish. More than 50 members of the Guard stayed at the zoo on Monday and promoted the waterfowl to the rank of brigadier general.

Nils was knighted in 2008. You may notice the letter "III" at the end of his name. The current Nils is the third penguin to receive honorary ranks in the Norwegian army. The first Nils started working as a mascot in 1972, and he received the rank of corporal in 1982.

Norway and Edinburgh Zoo have been associated with penguins since 1914, when a Norwegian family donated the first king penguins to the zoo. "Since then, RZSS Edinburgh Zoo has pioneered the science and care of penguins, and penguins continue to be an icon and integral part of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland," the zoo notes.
